• Is it Okay Not to Homeschool in the Summer?
Pull Up A Chair by Shirley M.R. Minster

Pull up a lawn chair. Better yet, spread out a blanket under a leafy tree on the cool green grass, stretch out, and let’s talk about summer and its special meaning for homeschooling parents. A common question that I am asked is, “Is it okay to not do school in the summer?

• Leaving Home by Jon Remmerde

One of our goals as parents was to help our daughters, Juniper and Amanda, achieve maturity and independence. We worked toward that goal through all the years we enjoyed living together as a close family, with most of our education guided by our family, by all of us working toward knowledge and wisdom together.

• Learning a Lesson from the World by Rachel Dudley

Being homeschooled for virtually my entire life, I have always been aware of the fact that the entire world is my school. Although I may now be attending a typical private university, I have certainly not stopped learning from the world around me. In fact, if anything, the lessons I learn from society have grown in number and significance.

• Homeschool Graduate's Thoughts - Our Mentors
by Johnathan Warner

Who are our mentors? Who or what do we consider the greatest influence in our lives? The answer may be less straightforward than you might think.

• Homeschool Graduate's Thoughts - Measuring Our Lives by Michael Soule-Hinds

How do we measure our lives? Do we measure it in years? Months? Days?

It seems to me that the fundamental unit of our lives is not accurately measured by a scientific unit. I say that the fundamental unit of human life is the "moment". We cannot live our lives by the year, month, or day; we can only live one moment at a time.

• The Devil's Joy by Dr. Renée Fuller

The present was a penny saver in the form of a brilliant red ceramic figure with horns, a long tail and a mouth wide open in laughter. “My, that little devil is happy,” was my mother’s response to the present as she placed it on the table in my bedroom.

But it didn’t stay there for long. Within days it had found its way into a drawer: out of sight. Did I know why I had wanted it out of sight? In that undefined, almost brooding way of childhood I definitely did know.

• CLEPs - One Homeschool Senior's Experience by Lydia Rule

I was beginning to get a little worried. After 12 years of homeschooling, college was just around the corner. It was time to make decisions- and lots of them. As a freelance writer, I wanted to major in professional writing. But one small problem loomed in my way…

• Where Little People Belong by Barbara Frank

A recent blog post by a young mom got me thinking about how small children learn, and how important it is that they grow up in an environment conducive to learning.

• Drinking from the Toilet and Other Nasty Habits by Jenefer Igarashi

It's unlikely that you'll ever wonder why I've never been nominated for any "Mother of the Year" awards. Honestly, I'm astonished that all my children have made it this far - still alive and breathing. And although it's been a while since I've had any tragic crises or major traumatic events occur, I can't help but appreciate the things I've learned from these occurrences.

• Learning Disorders in the Homeschool by Donna Fawcett

When a child is born, most parents see in that child not only the beauty of the moment but all the things that encompass childhood and growing up. What will this baby look like as he or she matures? How can I best prepare this child for the years ahead? What will he or she become? They are all normal questions to ask. But what about the parent who’s child is born disabled?

• Future Conversation by Tammy Drennan

Two women meet at a playground, where their children are swinging and playing ball. The women are sitting on a bench watching. Eventually, they begin to talk... Hear what they have to say about homeschooling as it MIGHT be discussed in the future....

• Thinking and Writing Clearly by Dave Marks

Learning to write well involves more than just the ability to put words together so that they make sense to a reader. The ability to think clearly about situations is equally important. In developing this skill it doesn’t matter whether the person is thinking, speaking or writing.

• Kitchen Chemistry for Your Kids by Aurora Lipper

Chemistry is an exciting subject for kids of any age, especially if you set up a natural discovery environment for them to safely explore in. Let's find out how to do this in your own home with your own kids.

• Viewpoints:The Best Education Available by Michael Dante Aprile

It is consistently amazing to me how, when the “enemy comes in like a flood,” the Bible continues to be a “standard” against which we can measure true education. We can depend on its absolute teaching and use it as the foundation upon which to stand. I am now convinced of two things. One, that the Bible (or Scripture) is the foundation of ALL of the knowledge we have ever had or will have, and two, that we have within the pages of those sixty-six books the basis for teaching literally every academic subject known to man.

• Please Take Me Off Your Mailing List by J.R. Boswell

Normally, most editors don’t like to receive requests from people asking to be taken off the mailing list or to stop their subscription. I am glad to assist people if they ask, though. Yearly, we receive hundreds of requests from people wanting to receive Family Times and only a handful of requests asking to be “unsubscribed”. Often, we receive encouraging letters – usually from people subscribing. However, a few weeks ago, encouragement came from an unlikely source – from someone asking to be taken OFF our mailing list. But it was such a nice surprise, I had to share it.
