Tom Haskins, author FROM THE PROLOGUE There are some who say that the United States of America was not founded on Christian Principles. They state that the Bible requires Christians to obey every form of government and therefore the American Revolution could not have been based on Christian principles. Consider the following scripture:
“Obey the government, for God is the one who put it there. All governments have been placed in power by God. So those who refuse to obey the laws of the land are refusing to obey God, and punishment will follow. For the authorities do not frighten people who are doing right, but they frighten those who do wrong. So do what they say, and you will get along well. 4 The authorities are sent by God to help you. But if you are doing something wrong, of course you should be afraid, for you will be punished. The authorities are established by God for that very purpose, to punish those who do wrong. So you must obey the government for two reasons: to keep from being punished and to keep a clear conscience. Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid so they can keep on doing the work God intended them to do.” -Romans 13:1-6, The New Living Translation Bible.
However, they fail to remember that the government of England was a parliamentary form of government which limited the power of the parliament and guaranteed certain rights to its subjects. The Parliament and The king of England were also subject to the terms of the English Bill of Rights. The English king and Parliament failed to protect and provide the rights merited by the people under their rule in America as England’s charter required. Therefore, these same subjects of theirs living in America had the right to demand those rights. When they did, the English king and Parliament sent armed troops to attack their homes and cut off supplies from their families. When this happened they then had the right to defend themselves and since Parliament failed to honor the requirements of their charter the people of America had the right to secede and form their own sovereign government. The charter, or English Bill of Rights was a covenant between the people of England and its government. History, including ancient history, will show that whenever one party of a covenant breaks the covenant, the other party is no longer bound by that covenant. Some of the rights of the people of the American colonies that were violated by the English king and Parliament are show in the following pages.:
English Bill of Rights “Englishmen possessed certain civil and political rights that could not be taken away. These included:
• freedom from royal interference with the law • freedom from taxation by royal prerogative, without agreement by Parliament • freedom to petition the king • freedom from a peace-time standing army (An army comprises all of a nation's land-based military forces or a specific large military force.) • freedom to bear arms for self-defenc e as allowed by law • freedom to elect members of Parliament • the freedom of speech in Parliament •freedom from cruel and unusual punishments • freedom from fines and forfeitures without trial “ - English Bill of Rights, 1689.
In the (U.S.) Declaration of Independence these examples of the English king’s and the English Parliament’s violation of the English Bill of Rights are listed clearly so as to show the world the justice of the cause of the American Revolution.
Please note the words of John Quincy Adams:
"Resistance, instantaneous, unconcerted, sympathetic, inflexible resistance, like an electric shock, startled and roused the people of all the English colonies on this continent. This was the first signal of the North American Union. The struggle was for chartered rights-for English liberties-for the cause of Algernon Sidney and John Hampden-for trial by jury- -the Habeus Corpus and Magna Charta.
But the English lawyers had decided that Parliament was omnipotentand Parliament, in its omnipotence, instead of trial by jury and the Habeas Corpus, enacted admiralty courts in England to try Americans for offences charged against them as committed in America; instead of the privileges of Magna Charta, nullified the charter itself of Massachusetts Bay; shut up the port of Boston; sent armies and navies to keep the peace and teach the colonies that John Hampden was a rebel and Algernon Sidney a traitor. English liberties had failed them. From the omnipotence of Parliament the colonists appealed to the rights of man and the omnipotence of the God of battles. Union! Union! was the instinctive and simultaneous cry throughout the land. Their Congress, assembled at Philadelphia, once-twice-had petitioned the king; had remonstrated to Parliament; had addressed the people of Britain, for the rights of Englishmen- in vain. Fleets and armies, the blood of Lexington, and the fires of Charlestown and Falmouth, had been the answer to petition, remonstrance, and address....” - John Quincy Adams given during the Jubilee of the Constitution, delivered at New York, April 30, 1839, before the New York Historical Society
As you read the thoughts of our Founding Fathers in the following pages, I expect that it will become self-evident that they were primarily Christians, that this nation was founded on Christian principles and that “this is a Christian people and a Christian nation” – U. S. Supreme Court, Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States, 1892. In the back of this book you will find the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution in a form that can be easily read. If you want to know what your rights truly are, then you must read these precious documents yourself. One of the great problems with the American public and legal systems today is that the people of America do not know their rights or the obligation of their leaders by first-hand knowledge of the documents that define them. These documents are covenants between the various free states of the United States and are by definition designed to place limitations and requirements on the our leaders. Please note that the Declaration of Independence names “the God of nature” and the United States Constitution references “the year of our Lord.” These are not words that would be chosen by atheists in the foundational documents of their new nation.
It is important for all Americans to understand that the Declaration, because it precedes the United States Constitution, has the greater sovereignty and authority. Since the United States Constitution came after the Declaration of Independence and because it does not state in any way that it is replacing or augmenting the Declaration of Independence,, it is subject to the terms and rules of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence was an agreement between the colonies and is a legal and legally binding document. In the Declaration of Independence is mentioned a God who created nature and mankind.
For those who would say that those were different times and we are a different people, or what matters is how we interpret the Constitution now, not how the founding fathers did, I offer the following United States Supreme Court decision: "The Constitution is a written instrument and as such its meaning does not alter, that which it meant when it was adopted, it means now!"
